READY FOR SOME BOBA TEA!
Bubble tea, also known as boba tea or pearl milk tea, is a popular Taiwanese drink that typically consists of a tea base (often black tea or green tea), milk, sweetener (such as sugar or honey), and chewy tapioca pearls or other toppings (such as fruit jelly, aloe vera, or fruit bits).
Indians cannot live without their daily dose of tea or masala tea or milk tea. Now that bubble tea has entered the Indian market, it has managed to make a permanent corner in everyones hearts too. Bubble Tea, also known as Tapioca Milk Tea or Boba Tea is originally a Taiwanese drink prepared with or without milk, along with the most important ingredient i.e. Boba or also know as Tapioca Pearls. Bangalore happens to be a foodies paradise, and that’s why you can easily order from a good bubble tea place through Zomato or Swiggy or directly from your favorite Boba Tea or Bubble Tea shop.
DIVERSE VARIETIES
The varieties of bubble tea are endless, and often do not even include tea! A few of these are fruit juices, fruit milk, coffee, and salted cream. Along with these, there are several toppings besides tapioca pearls that can be used.
The two main components of bubble tea are of course the tapioca pearls and the tea. We decided to start with this first since it is the foundation of the drink, while the pearls are the topping. A well-brewed beverage is essential for a delicious drink!
Shops will rarely use green tea (such as matcha) as a bubble tea base but can be a refreshing alternative to milky, sugary caffeine-filled drinks. The most common green teas are matcha, hojicha, and jasmine.
QUALITY
Many boba shops don’t focus on the quality of the infusion itself. They use blends which is cheap in bulk and forgiving in terms of brew time, temperature, and reheating.
MILK
Classic bubble tea usually uses whole cow’s milk. Cheaper stores use milk powder mixed with water. Oats milk, Soy milk and almond milk are also getting popular options in India for Vegan and Lactose intolerant customers. The above non-dairy milk alternatives are healthy options too.
The main difference between dairy and non-dairy milk is mostly their taste. All of the milk mentioned above have distinct and varying tastes which cannot really be described without sounding like a wine taster.
SIMPLE SYRUP
The most common sweetener you will find used in bubble tea is simple syrup. This is because sugar cannot be dissolved in cold liquids. Simple syrup is white sugar and water mixed together. It is a fundamental sweetener that has no other flavour besides sweetness.
You can even use Honey or Brown Sugar for making the Bubble Tea sweet. You can also use Jaggery powder to make your milkshakes sweet.
